GCT is affiliated to the University of Madras 1951.

The college introduced a Mechanical Engineering branch in the year 1952.

The college revised its Engineering studies syllabus and introduced the five year semester plan in the academic year 1968-69.

GCT introduced postgraduate degree courses in Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering from 1971.

The college also conducts PhD programmes in various departments.

The College conducts periodically refresher courses on topics of technical interest.

A placement and training center functions in the college to help students contact employing companies.

The college runs a fully equipped library within its campus.

The college provides various facilities for the physical training of its students; this includes an open-air and an indoor Gymnasium along with various games and track events that are conducted from time to time.

The college houses a well-equipped auditorium with a seating capacity of as many as 850 people.

The college also provides medical, postal and bank facilities to its students.
