GCT is affiliated to the University of Madras 1951. -
The college introduced a Mechanical Engineering branch in the year 1952. -
The college revised its Engineering studies syllabus and introduced the five year semester plan in the academic year 1968-69. -
GCT introduced postgraduate degree courses in Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering from 1971. The college also offers part time courses in various subjects.

A placement and training center functions in the college to help students contact employing companies. The college runs a fully equipped library within its campus. The college provides various facilities for the physical training of its students; this includes an open-air and an indoor Gymnasium along with various games and track events that are conducted from time to time. The college houses a well-equipped auditorium with a seating capacity of as many as 850 people. The college also provides medical, postal and bank facilities to its students.
